About the Anaemia Profile
The anaemia profile looks for the cause of low haemoglobin. It combines a blood count, reticulocyte count, blood smear, vitamin B12 and iron studies to tell iron deficiency, vitamin deficiency and other types of anaemia apart. Treatment depends on the cause, so identifying it matters.

Understanding your results
Small red cells with low iron point to iron deficiency. Large red cells with low B12 or folate suggest vitamin deficiency. A high reticulocyte count shows the bone marrow is responding to blood loss or destruction. The smear shows cell shapes that give clues to rarer causes.
