Why 24-hour blood pressure monitoring

Blood pressure changes through the day. It rises with activity and stress, and normally dips at night. A single reading in a clinic may be higher than your usual pressure (white-coat effect) or lower than it truly is (masked hypertension). Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring, or ABPM, measures your pressure automatically over 24 hours in your normal environment.

The report gives average readings for the whole day, daytime and night, highest and lowest values, and the night-time dip. Doctors use these to confirm or rule out hypertension, judge whether medicines are working and adjust treatment.

How the test is done

• A cuff is fitted on your upper arm and connected to a small recorder worn on a belt.
• The cuff inflates automatically at set intervals, usually more often in the daytime and less often at night.
• You carry on with normal activities. When the cuff inflates, stop moving, keep the arm relaxed and still, and do not talk.
• You note your activities, medicine times and sleep hours in a diary. The device is removed after 24 hours and the readings are downloaded for the report.

Tips for a good recording

• Wear a loose, short-sleeved top over the cuff.
• Keep the cuff arm still when it inflates. If a reading fails, the device will retry shortly.
• Do not bathe or swim while wearing the device. Keep the recorder dry.
• Take your medicines as usual unless your doctor advises otherwise, and note the times.
• Sleep with the cuff on. It may wake you briefly, which is normal.

Yes. Our trained technician visits with portable equipment. Share your address on WhatsApp and we confirm the visit slot with you.

Do I need a doctor's prescription?

A prescription helps us run the right test, but you can also book on your own for a routine check. Send a photo of the prescription on WhatsApp if you have one.

Will the cuff disturb my sleep?

It may wake you for a moment when it inflates, but most people fall back asleep quickly. Night readings are important, so please keep the cuff on.

Is ABPM better than checking BP at home?

Home readings are useful, but ABPM gives many readings over a full day and night, including during sleep, which cannot be done with a manual home device.

Can I exercise or go to work during ABPM?

Yes, follow your normal routine and avoid very strenuous exercise. Note your activities in the diary.

What do I do if the cuff slips or the device stops?

Re-position the cuff and note the time. If the device keeps failing, call us and we will guide you.

Can the test be done at home and what does it cost?
