About the Iron Studies
Iron studies measure serum iron, TIBC, transferrin saturation, UIBC and ferritin to show whether your body has too little or too much iron. They help diagnose iron deficiency anaemia, check iron stores and monitor treatment with iron tablets or injections.
Symptoms and situations where this test helps
- Tiredness, pale skin, breathlessness or dizziness
- Heavy periods, pregnancy or poor diet
- Hair fall, brittle nails or craving for ice or clay
- Low haemoglobin on a CBC
Understanding your results
Low ferritin and low iron with high TIBC suggest iron deficiency. High ferritin and high saturation can mean iron overload or inflammation. Ferritin can rise during infection, so your doctor interprets it with a blood count and symptoms.
What your doctor may advise next
Your doctor may advise iron supplements, tests for the cause of blood loss, or repeat testing after a few weeks of treatment.

Do I need to fast for the Iron Studies?
Yes, fast for 8 to 12 hours before the sample (water is fine) unless your doctor says otherwise.
Can you collect the sample at home?
