About this test

A DEXA scan measures bone mineral density to assess osteoporosis and fracture risk.

Flat 50% off + free pick & drop

This scan is not performed in our laboratory. Our team books the appointment with a partner imaging centre, guides you on preparation and arranges pick and drop. Offer applies to partner-centre imaging. Rates and pick-and-drop details are confirmed when you book.

How to prepare

  • Avoid calcium supplements on the test day unless told otherwise
  • Wear clothes without metal

What a DEXA scan shows

Bone densitometry, or DEXA (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry), measures bone mineral density, usually at the lower spine and the hip. It is the standard test for diagnosing osteoporosis and for judging the risk of fractures.

The result is shown as a T-score, which compares your bone density with that of a healthy young adult. A T-score of -1.0 or above is normal, between -1.0 and -2.5 shows low bone mass (osteopenia), and -2.5 or below indicates osteoporosis. For some people, a Z-score compared with people of the same age is used.

Who should consider a DEXA scan

  • Women after menopause and men above 65 years or those with risk factors
  • A fracture after a minor fall or injury
  • Long-term use of steroids or some other medicines
  • Conditions such as thyroid, parathyroid or kidney disease, early menopause, low body weight or low vitamin D
  • Monitoring how well osteoporosis treatment is working

What to expect

  • You lie on a padded table while a scanner arm passes over you. The test takes about 10 to 20 minutes and is painless.
  • The radiation dose is very small, less than a chest X-ray.
  • Wear comfortable clothing without metal. Avoid calcium supplements for 24 hours before the scan and tell the staff about any recent barium study or nuclear scan, which can affect the result.
  • Tell the staff if you are or may be pregnant.

Bone density screening at home or on-site

For people who cannot travel and for company camps, bone mineral density (BMD) screening can be arranged at home or on-site on request. DEXA at a partner centre remains the standard test for diagnosing osteoporosis. Tell us which you need and we will confirm the method, rate and slot.

Booking through HumanCare Pathlabs

The scan is performed at a partner centre. We arrange the appointment and free pick & drop with a flat 50% off. Rates and offer terms are confirmed when you book.

Frequently asked questions

How often should a DEXA scan be repeated?

Usually every one to two years when monitoring treatment or risk, as advised by your doctor. Use the same machine each time for comparison.

Is vitamin D testing related to bone density?

Yes. Low vitamin D, calcium and parathyroid hormone can affect bone health. Your doctor may advise these blood tests along with a DEXA scan.

Can men get osteoporosis?

Yes, though it is less common than in women. Risk increases with age, long-term steroids, low testosterone and certain illnesses.

Medical information here is for general awareness. Your doctor decides which tests you need.
