About the Liver Function Test (LFT)

A liver function test (LFT) measures enzymes, bilirubin and proteins in your blood to show how well the liver is working. It is used to check for fatty liver, hepatitis, jaundice, damage from alcohol or medicines, and to monitor known liver disease. The LFT test is also part of most health checkups.

Symptoms and situations where this test helps

  • Yellow eyes or skin, dark urine or pale stools
  • Loss of appetite, nausea, upper right abdominal pain or swelling
  • Long-term use of medicines that can affect the liver, or regular alcohol use
  • Diabetes, obesity or high triglycerides, which are linked with fatty liver

Understanding your results

Raised SGPT (ALT) and SGOT (AST) point to liver cell irritation. A high ALP and GGT suggest a problem with the bile ducts. High bilirubin shows jaundice. Low albumin can mean long-standing liver or kidney disease. One mildly high value is not a diagnosis; your doctor looks at the pattern.

What your doctor may advise next

Your doctor may advise an ultrasound of the abdomen, hepatitis B and C tests, or a repeat LFT after changing medicines or lifestyle.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to fast for an LFT?

Fasting is not essential, but many labs prefer 8 to 10 hours so that fat in a recent meal does not affect the sample. We tell you at booking.

Which is better, LFT or a full liver profile?

The LFT covers the main enzymes, bilirubin and proteins. Your doctor may add hepatitis markers or an ultrasound if the LFT is abnormal.

Do I need to fast for the Liver Function Test (LFT)?

No special fasting is needed for the tests in this profile.

Can you collect the sample at home?

Yes. Send your address on WhatsApp and our technician will confirm a slot.

Can I add or remove tests?

Yes. Tell us what your doctor advised and we will adjust the profile and share the rate before you pay.

Profiles are screening tools. Your doctor interprets the results and decides on further tests.
