About this test
FibroScan is a painless, non-invasive test that measures how stiff the liver is, which helps doctors judge liver scarring (fibrosis), and how much fat it holds (steatosis). It uses a small probe placed on the skin over the liver and takes only a few minutes.
It is commonly advised for fatty liver, long-term hepatitis B or C, alcohol-related liver disease, and to follow liver health over time without a biopsy.
Who it is for
- Fatty liver on ultrasound or raised liver enzymes
- Hepatitis B or C, or long-term alcohol use
- Diabetes, obesity or high triglycerides with liver concerns
- Follow-up of liver treatment, as advised by your doctor
How to prepare
- Do not eat or drink (except water) for 3 hours before the test
- Wear loose clothing that lets the right side of the abdomen be reached
- Carry earlier liver tests, ultrasound and hepatitis reports
What FibroScan measures
FibroScan is a form of transient elastography. A small probe on the skin sends a gentle vibration through the liver, and the speed at which it travels shows how stiff the liver is. Stiffness, measured in kilopascals (kPa), reflects the amount of scarring (fibrosis). A controlled attenuation parameter (CAP) score estimates how much fat is in the liver.
The test helps doctors assess fatty liver disease, hepatitis B and C, alcohol-related liver disease and other long-term liver conditions, and to follow changes over time without a needle biopsy.
How the test is done
- You lie on your back with your right arm raised behind your head.
- Gel is applied over the lower right ribs and the probe is pressed gently on the skin.
- You feel a light tap each time a reading is taken. About ten valid readings are recorded.
- The test takes about 15 to 20 minutes, and results are available immediately for the report.
Who should consider FibroScan
- Fatty liver seen on ultrasound or raised SGOT and SGPT
- Diabetes, obesity or high triglycerides with liver concerns
- Long-term hepatitis B or C
- Regular alcohol use or long-term use of medicines that affect the liver
- Follow-up of treatment, as advised by your doctor
Limits of the test
FibroScan may be less accurate in people with a very high body weight, a narrow gap between the ribs, fluid in the abdomen, or very recent heavy meals. It is not suitable if you have a pacemaker or implanted electronic device unless your doctor advises it is safe, or during pregnancy unless advised. Your doctor interprets the result along with blood tests and ultrasound.
At home or on-site
FibroScan can be arranged at your home or at your office or site on request, for individuals and for company camps. Tell us your location and we will confirm availability, preparation and the rate before the visit.
Frequently asked questions
Do you really come to my home for this test?
Yes. Our trained technician visits with portable equipment. Share your address on WhatsApp and we confirm the visit slot with you.
Do I need a doctor's prescription?
A prescription helps us run the right test, but you can also book on your own for a routine check. Send a photo of the prescription on WhatsApp if you have one.
Is FibroScan painful?
No. It is painless and non-invasive. You feel a gentle tap from the probe.
Do I need to fast for FibroScan?
Yes, do not eat or drink anything except water for about 3 hours before the test, unless your doctor says otherwise.
Is FibroScan better than ultrasound for fatty liver?
Ultrasound shows fat and structure. FibroScan adds a measurement of stiffness (scarring) and a fat score. Doctors often use both together.
How often should it be repeated?
It depends on your condition. Your doctor decides, often every six to twelve months in liver disease.
Can FibroScan be done at my office?
Yes, on request and subject to availability. Contact us with your location and the number of people.
