What a sleep study records

A sleep study records what happens in your body while you sleep. Depending on the type of study, sensors measure breathing effort and airflow, snoring, blood oxygen level, heart rate and rhythm, body position, and sometimes brain waves, eye movements, muscle tone and leg movements.

The main use is to diagnose obstructive sleep apnoea, a condition in which the airway repeatedly narrows or closes during sleep. It can cause loud snoring, gasping, unrefreshing sleep, morning headaches and daytime sleepiness. Sleep studies also help evaluate insomnia, restless legs, periodic limb movements and some other sleep disorders.

How the study is done

• In the evening, our technician fits the sensors on your chest, finger, nose and other points and checks that the recording works.
• You follow your normal bedtime routine and sleep in your own bed.
• The recording runs through the night. The technician returns the next morning to collect the equipment.
• The data is analysed and a report is prepared for your doctor, including the number of breathing pauses per hour (the apnoea-hypopnoea index), the oxygen dips and the time spent in different positions or stages.

Do I need a doctor's prescription?

A prescription helps us run the right test, but you can also book on your own for a routine check. Send a photo of the prescription on WhatsApp if you have one.

Will I be able to sleep with the sensors on?

Most people do. Sleeping in your own bed usually helps. A few minutes of adjustment at bedtime is common. Even a shorter sleep time can give a useful result.

What is sleep apnoea?

Sleep apnoea is a condition where breathing repeatedly pauses or becomes shallow during sleep. It is more common in people who are overweight or have a narrow airway, but it can affect anyone. Untreated, it is linked with high blood pressure and daytime fatigue.

How is the severity decided?

Doctors count the breathing pauses and shallow breathing episodes per hour of sleep. Generally 5 to 15 is called mild, 15 to 30 moderate and above 30 severe, along with oxygen levels and symptoms. Your doctor decides treatment.

Is a home sleep study as good as one in a sleep lab?

A home study is a convenient way to test for suspected sleep apnoea and is accepted for many patients. People with complex conditions may need a full laboratory study. Your doctor can advise which is suitable.
