What a kidney scan shows
A kidney scan, or renal scintigraphy, is a nuclear medicine test that shows how well each kidney works and how urine drains out. A very small amount of a radioactive tracer is injected into a vein. A special camera then records how the tracer is taken up and passed out by the kidneys.
Two common types are DTPA or MAG3 scans, which assess drainage and the share of function of each kidney, and DMSA scans, which look for scars in the kidney substance, often after repeated urine infections in children.
What to expect
- You may be asked to drink plenty of water before the scan.
- The tracer is injected into an arm vein. You lie under the camera while images are taken, which can last 30 to 60 minutes. DMSA images are taken a few hours after the injection.
- The amount of radiation is small and the tracer leaves the body in urine within a day. Drinking water helps.
Safety notes
Tell the staff if you are pregnant, may be pregnant or are breastfeeding. A nuclear scan is normally avoided in pregnancy. Bring all earlier ultrasound reports, kidney function tests and prescription details. For children, a parent stays with the child.
