About the TORCH Profile
The TORCH profile checks IgG and IgM antibodies against Toxoplasma, rubella, cytomegalovirus (CMV) and herpes simplex virus. These infections can affect a developing baby, so doctors advise screening when planning pregnancy or after repeated pregnancy loss.
Symptoms and situations where this test helps
- Planning a pregnancy
- Recurrent miscarriage or stillbirth
- Infection or rash in early pregnancy
- Unexplained findings on pregnancy scans
Understanding your results
IgG shows past infection or immunity, IgM suggests recent infection. IgM can stay positive for long and may be false-positive, so doctors may repeat the test or add avidity tests. Do not panic over a single result; your gynaecologist interprets it.
What your doctor may advise next
Your gynaecologist may advise repeat testing, scans or vaccination before pregnancy, such as the rubella vaccine if you are not immune.
