About the Gestational Diabetes Profile
The gestational diabetes profile uses an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) and HbA1c to find high blood sugar that starts in pregnancy. Gestational diabetes often has no symptoms but can affect the baby’s growth, so screening is routine, usually between 24 and 28 weeks, or earlier in high-risk women.
Symptoms and situations where this test helps
- Pregnancy, especially between 24 and 28 weeks
- Earlier screening if overweight, previous gestational diabetes or family history of diabetes
- PCOS or a previous large baby
- Excess thirst or frequent urination in pregnancy
Understanding your results
An OGTT measures sugar before and after a glucose drink. Values above the cut-offs set by your obstetrician indicate gestational diabetes. Diet and exercise control it in many women, and some need medicines or insulin.
What your doctor may advise next
Your obstetrician or diabetes specialist plans diet, monitoring and delivery care based on your results.
