About the Cancer Screening Male
Cancer screening for men includes tumour markers PSA, CEA and AFP. These are blood markers that can rise in some cancers, such as prostate, bowel and liver. They are not diagnostic by themselves and are used only on a doctor’s advice, along with examination and imaging.
Symptoms and situations where this test helps
- Men above 50, or above 45 with family history of prostate cancer
- Urinary symptoms such as weak stream or frequent night urination, as advised
- Chronic liver disease needing AFP follow-up
- Doctor-advised follow-up after cancer treatment
Understanding your results
A raised PSA can be due to prostate enlargement or infection as well as cancer. Raised CEA and AFP can have non-cancer causes. A normal marker does not rule out cancer. Your doctor decides the next steps.
What your doctor may advise next
Your doctor may advise repeat testing, an ultrasound, MRI or biopsy depending on the finding.
