MRI scan

Detailed imaging of the brain, spine, joints and soft tissue, arranged through our partner centre.

  • Flat 50% off
  • Free Pick & Drop
  • Performed at partner imaging centre

About this test

MRI uses magnets and radio waves, not X-rays, to produce detailed images of internal structures.

Flat 50% off + free pick & drop

This scan is not performed in our laboratory. Our team books the appointment with a partner imaging centre, guides you on preparation and arranges pick and drop. Offer applies to partner-centre imaging. Rates and pick-and-drop details are confirmed when you book.

How to prepare

  • Remove all metal and tell the staff about pacemakers, implants or clips
  • Follow the preparation we share for your specific scan

What an MRI scan shows

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) uses a strong magnetic field and radio waves, not X-rays, to create detailed pictures of soft tissues. It is the preferred test for the brain and spinal cord, nerves, discs of the spine, joints, ligaments and muscles, and for many conditions of the abdomen and pelvis.

Doctors advise MRI for persistent headaches with warning signs, seizures, stroke evaluation, back and neck pain with leg or arm symptoms, knee and shoulder injuries, and to look more closely at something seen on an ultrasound or CT.

How the scan is done

  • You change into a gown and remove all metal items. A questionnaire checks for implants.
  • You lie on a table that slides into the scanner. The scanner is a tunnel that is open at both ends.
  • The machine makes loud knocking noises. Earplugs or headphones are given. You must stay still.
  • A scan takes about 20 to 60 minutes depending on the body part. For some scans a contrast injection is given. Contrast charges are extra.

Safety checklist

Tell the staff before booking if you have a pacemaker, cochlear implant, aneurysm clip, insulin pump, neurostimulator, metal fragments in the eye, or if you are pregnant. Many modern implants are MRI-safe, but the exact model must be checked. If you are claustrophobic, tell us in advance so that the centre can plan.

Booking through HumanCare Pathlabs

The scan is performed at a partner imaging centre, not in our laboratory. We book your slot, share preparation instructions, and arrange free pick & drop. Imaging offers a flat 50% off. Rates and offer terms are confirmed when you book, and any contrast is charged extra.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a medical imaging technique used in radiology to form pictures of the anatomy and the physiological processes of the body in both health and disease. MRI scanners use strong magnetic fields, magnetic field gradients, and radio waves to generate images of the organs in the body. MRI does not involve X-rays or the use of ionizing radiation, which distinguishes it from CT or CAT scans and PET scans. Magnetic resonance imaging is a medical application of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). NMR can also be used for imaging in other NMR applications such as NMR spectroscopy.

While the hazards of X-rays are now well-controlled in most medical contexts, an MRI scan may still be seen as a better choice than a CT scan. MRI is widely used in hospitals and clinics for medical diagnosis, staging of disease and follow-up without exposing the body to radiation. An MRI may yield different information compared with CT. There may be risks and discomfort associated with MRI scans. Compared with CT scans, MRI scans typically take longer and are louder, and they usually need the subject to enter a narrow, confining tube. In addition, people with some medical implants or other non-removable metal inside the body may be unable to undergo an MRI examination safely.

MRI was originally called NMRI (nuclear magnetic resonance imaging), but the use of ‘nuclear’ in the acronym was dropped to avoid negative associations with the word.[1] Certain atomic nuclei are able to absorb and emit radio frequency energy when placed in an external magnetic field. In clinical and research MRI, hydrogen atoms are most often used to generate a detectable radio-frequency signal that is received by antennas in close proximity to the anatomy being examined. Hydrogen atoms are naturally abundant in people and other biological organisms, particularly in water and fat. For this reason, most MRI scans essentially map the location of water and fat in the body. Pulses of radio waves excite the nuclear spin energy transition, and magnetic field gradients localize the signal in space. By varying the parameters of the pulse sequence, different contrasts may be generated between tissues based on the relaxation properties of the hydrogen atoms therein. Since its development in the 1970s and 1980s, MRI has proven to be a highly versatile imaging technique. While MRI is most prominently used in diagnostic medicine and biomedical research, it also may be used to form images of non-living objects. MRI scans are capable of producing a variety of chemical and physical data, in addition to detailed spatial images. The sustained increase in demand for MRI within health systems has led to concerns about cost effectiveness and overdiagnosis.

Frequently asked questions

Is MRI safe? Does it use radiation?

MRI does not use ionising radiation. It is considered safe for most people without implants that are unsafe in a magnetic field.

Do I need to fast before an MRI?

Not for most scans. Abdomen and pelvis scans and scans with contrast may need a few hours of fasting. We share the exact instruction when you book.

Can I wear my clothes during an MRI?

Clothes with metal zips or hooks must be removed. You will be given a gown.

How long before I get the report?

The partner centre prepares the report. Timing is confirmed at booking and varies by scan.
