About the Diabetic Kidney Check
The Diabetic Kidney Check looks for early kidney damage (diabetic nephropathy) in people with diabetes. It combines HbA1c, serum creatinine, eGFR and the urine albumin-creatinine ratio (ACR). Finding a small leak of protein early lets your doctor protect your kidneys with treatment and better sugar control.
Symptoms and situations where this test helps
- Type 2 diabetes for more than five years, or type 1 for more than five years
- Diabetes with high blood pressure
- Foamy urine, swelling in feet or face
- Yearly check-up for people with diabetes
Understanding your results
A urine ACR above 30 mg/g on repeat tests indicates microalbuminuria, the earliest sign of kidney involvement. A falling eGFR means reduced filtering. HbA1c shows whether sugar control is likely to be harming the kidneys. Results are repeated to confirm.
What your doctor may advise next
Your doctor may advise tighter sugar and BP control, medicines that protect the kidneys, and a nephrology review if values worsen.
